- Kenny and Dema Guinn -
Kenny and Dema Guinn
Dr. Kenneth Carroll “Kenny” Guinn (August 24, 1936 – July 22, 2010) was a visionary leader who left an enduring mark on Nevada through his unwavering commitment to education. As the 27th Governor of Nevada from 1999 to 2007, he championed policies that expanded opportunities for students, strengthened the state’s economy, and shaped a brighter future for generations to come.
Born in Garland, Arkansas, and raised in California, Dr. Guinn pursued a career in education before stepping into business and public service. He served as superintendent of the Clark County School District, where he worked to improve educational access and outcomes. Later, as an executive at Nevada Savings and Loan and Southwest Gas Corporation, he gained a reputation for strategic leadership and fiscal responsibility. However, education remained his true passion, shaping his tenure as governor
Former Governor Kenny Guinn’s most enduring achievement was the creation of the Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship, ensuring that thousands of Nevada high school graduates could afford college. Since its inception in 1999, the scholarship has been awarded to and utilized by more than 175,000 students in Nevada, distributing nearly $700 million. This program has significantly increased student access to higher education, more than doubling the number of students attending Nevada’s colleges and universities. These outcomes underscore the scholarship’s role in fostering a more educated workforce in Nevada. As Dr. Guinn himself said, “As you know, education isn’t just on my agenda, it is my agenda.” Under his leadership, college attendance in Nevada surged from 37% to 48%, and since has empowered tens of thousands of Nevada students with to access higher education. His belief in investing in Nevada’s youth was evident: “The future of Nevada is directly tied to the quality of education we provide to our children.”
Former First Lady Dema Guinn shared her husband’s passion for education and public service during their 54-year marriage. As a young mother to their sons Jeffrey and Steven, she knew the important role of being her sons’ first teacher. Dema continues to honor her husband’s legacy by administering a scholarship that supplements the Millennium Scholarship. It is awarded to aspiring teachers in their senior year, who commit to teaching in Nevada for at least one year. She believes in supporting future educators, ensuring that Nevada employs and retains its best and brightest.
Former Governor Guinn once said, “We cannot sit idly by and hope that the future will take care of itself. We must actively build it.” His leadership continues to shape Nevada’s educational landscape, proving that his impact did not end when he left office. Through the students who benefit from the Guinn Millennium scholarship and the scholarship provided by Dema Guinn, their legacy truly remains a guiding light for the educational system across the entire State of Nevada.

- Robert Strawder -
Robert V. Strawder Jr.
Robert Strawder’s journey is a true testament to the power of perseverance and transformation. Raised in the Donna Street Housing Projects of North Las Vegas, Robert overcame the challenges of gang involvement, drugs, and legal troubles. After being on the run for 18 years, he turned himself in and was acquitted in 2016. His determination to rise above his circumstances is reflected in his belief that, “If you have a support system, then you can overcome all those obstacles and hopefully, rise to the next level.” Robert credits his community and the people who stood by him as the foundation for his ability to change his life and commit to helping others do the same.
After his acquittal, Robert made a promise to give back to the community, leading him to graduate from the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) in 2017 with degrees in General Studies and Mental Behavioral Services. For over eight years, Robert has been a mentor and, for the last three years, he has been a teacher in the Clark County School District. In these roles, he has worked tirelessly to help youth escape the negative environments he once knew. In his work, he recognizes the critical challenges many students face. “Educators need to understand, when it comes to education, kids don’t care about that because they’re just trying to eat… They’re trying to dodge getting beat up and shot at while they walk home from school.” This understanding drives Robert’s approach, helping students not just academically but in their personal growth and survival.
One of Robert’s greatest achievements is the creation of the Hip Hop Entrepreneurship Program, launched as a pilot class in 2019 at Desert Rose High School. This innovative program combines hip-hop music, restorative practices, and mentorship to engage youth. By teaching essential skills like literacy, math, critical thinking, and entrepreneurship, Robert’s program has helped improve attendance, behavior, and academic performance. Robert’s vision extends beyond local schools; he aims to take his Hip Hop Entrepreneurship program nationwide.
In 2020 Robert founded the Donna Street Community Center in North Las Vegas to provide resources and technology to families in underserved communities. In February 2024 he opened the doors to a new computer lab in the newly renovated Donna Street Community Center. It was Robert’s vision to build the Donna Street Community Center Inc. and give back to the neighborhood he once grew up in. Through partnerships with organizations like the UNLV Diversity Department, Amazon, Anthem Insurance, and Liberty Dental, Robert has built a platform for creating lasting change.
A well-known underground rapper and member of Digital Underground, Robert continues to make a difference by organizing events like backpack drives, holiday parties, and youth talent shows. His dedication was recognized when he was awarded Clark County School District’s New Educator of the Year in 2023. Robert’s legacy is one of resilience, leadership, and a deep commitment to giving back to the community that shaped him.

He meets with families and educators in remote areas, fostering strong community ties and ensuring all voices are heard. - Jeff Granger -
Jeff Granger
At Barber Elementary School, success is built on a foundation of love and trust—two essential qualities that Principal Jeff Granger believes define the most meaningful relationships. Under his leadership, these relationships serve as the bedrock for action, innovation, and remarkable student achievement.
Granger, who took the helm as principal in November 2020, stepped into his role at a time of immense challenge. The pandemic had widened educational gaps, disproportionately affecting families who struggled with access to childcare, technology, and essential resources. These gaps led to substantial learning loss which continues to pose challenges for many of Barber’s students. Instead of being daunted by these challenges, Principal Granger and his team saw an opportunity—to foster deeper relationships and implement strategies that would directly impact student outcomes.
One of the most powerful strategies they introduced was an evidence-based Response to Intervention (RTI) framework, targeting students in the bottom 20th percentile. The approach was simple yet transformative: focus on individualized support, leverage the collective expertise of educators, and create an environment where every child feels seen, valued, and capable of success.
This philosophy has yielded extraordinary results. In the 2023-24 school year alone, Barber Elementary moved 30 percent of its students from below the 40th percentile and lifted 25 percent above the 70th percentile on the Measures of Academic Progress assessment. As a result, the school has made a significant leap from a 2-star rating, now standing on the brink of achieving an impressive 4-star status under the Nevada School Performance Framework.
But Barber’s success isn’t confined within its own walls. Recognizing the power of collaboration, the school has formed a partnership with Liberty High School to expand professional learning beyond its campus. This initiative is not just about improving instruction—it’s about building a stronger educational community where students thrive from elementary through high school.
At the heart of it all is Principal Granger’s unwavering commitment to his team. He doesn’t see himself as a leader issuing directives from above; instead, he stands alongside his educators, lifting them up, empowering their voices, and fostering a culture where every teacher and student can achieve their highest potential. As he humbly puts it, “I need my teachers more than they need me.”
This is more than a story of academic improvement. It’s a testament to the power of relationships—where love and trust ignite transformation, and where students, teachers, and families rise together.
