Melynda Baker

Area Superintendent, Secondary Education, Washoe County School District

Melynda Baker is a dynamic and visionary leader who believes that meaningful change in education begins with direct engagement. As the Area Superintendent of Secondary Education for Washoe County School District (WCSD), she is known for her hands-on approach, actively working alongside students, families, and educators to address community needs.

With 22 years of experience spanning private, charter, and public schools across California, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and Nevada, Area Superintendent Baker brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep commitment to student success. Her leadership journey in WCSD began at Procter R. Hug High School, where she served as an English teacher, instructional coach, dean, and assistant principal. She later joined North Valleys High School as an assistant principal before taking on the role of principal at O’Brien Middle School. Through these roles, she not only mentored new leaders but also fostered a culture of collaboration and innovation, driving student achievement and school improvement.

A “cage-busting” leader, Area Superintendent Baker challenges conventional structures to create transformative learning environments. She understands that today’s students need more than traditional education models can provide, stating, “Our clientele, our students, our customers, need something completely different than what we are offering, and the system isn’t filling their need fast enough.” In response to the pandemic’s impact, she has been instrumental in identifying systemic changes necessary to better support students. She recognizes that education extends beyond the classroom, bridging the gap between schools and the community to create lasting solutions.

Area Superintendent Baker’s leadership centers on identifying the root causes of challenges to develop and strengthen the systems and structures necessary for growth and innovation. Her leadership is defined by innovative approaches to addressing the unique needs of the community. She led the development of Nevada’s first Dual Language Immersion Model, leveraging the strengths of heritage speakers and celebrating the community’s rich cultural diversity. As a result of this program, her district is seeing significant performance growth data including a decline in chronic absenteeism and a 34% higher pass rate in subjects like Algebra I.

Area Superintendent Baker’s leadership is both strategic and action-oriented, ensuring that broad visions translate into tangible results. She empowers educators by fostering collaboration, connecting them with resources, and refining their expertise to drive meaningful change. Under her guidance, WCSD schools are not just institutions—they are thriving ecosystems of growth, innovation, and opportunity. Area Superintendent Baker is a proud alumni of the Leadership Institute of Nevada’s Executive Leadership Academy, Cohort 9.

Area Superintendent Baker’s mission is clear: to ignite and sustain student success through equity-driven leadership, strategic support, and a deep commitment to educational excellence.
